Aiding Implant Placement With Sedation

santa rosa dental implantWhen you receive dental implants, this involves oral surgery and for some, this could be a source of discomfort or even anxiety. To ensure the process is comfortable for our patients, we may recommend dental sedation. In today’s blog, your Santa Rosa, CA, oral and maxillofacial surgeons talk about how we ensure comfortable implant placement with dental sedation.

The Placement of Dental Implants

Dental implants are not like traditional bridges or removable dentures. We actually insert the implant portion into the jaw surgically, where it will bond with the jawbone and act like a new root. This means it can stay in place for decades to come, possibly a lifetime, with proper care and attention. Our team will plan and guide the placement process with advanced digital imaging technology, and our doctors have surgical experience in our office and a spart of the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Trauma Team. We strive to ensure the experience is a comfortable one for our patients, even if they have dental anxiety or special needs that complicate the ability to undergo care.

Dental Sedation Options

We have three different options to choose from, and will select one based on factors like your age, weight, your medical history and any medications you are taking, and your anxiety levels or special needs. The mild and common option is nitrous oxide, administered through a mask over the nose. Patients inhale a gas and reach a deep state of calm. The effects wear off once the procedure ends. For dental implant placement, we will likely recommend oral or IV sedation. Oral is taken in a pill or liquid form prior to the procedure, and you enter a very deep state of calm with no memory of the procedure. A friend or family member should be available to take you home afterward. IV is administered intravenously and helps you enter a sleep-like state, with again no memory of the procedure. You also need to have someone to take you home, as the effects take time to wear off completely.
