When you need a calming solution so you can receive dental implants without anxiety or discomfort, we can provide one of three different dental sedation methods. We want to make sure your implant placement experience is a comfortable and positive one. In today’s blog, your Santa Rosa, CA, oral surgeons talk about sedation dentistry.
The Process of Placing Dental Implants
Dental implants are very different from traditional bridges and dentures. We don’t rely on crowns, suction, or adhesives to keep your prosthetic in place. Instead, we will insert a biocompatible titanium post into the jaw, which the body sees as a new tooth root. The post then bonds with the jaw, so we can attach an abutment and crown to complete an individual tooth, or use several to support a bridge or even a complete set of dentures. These new teeth look and function like natural ones, and can stay in place for decades to come. The procedure involves oral surgery to insert the posts, which is why we want to ensure your comfort during the process. Whether you’re receiving traditional or same-day dental implants, we want to keep you comfortable throughout!
Choosing A Calming Solution
We help patients enter a calm state using sedation, even if they have special needs or severe dental anxiety. Everyone deserves to ensure a positive and comfortable experience at the office, especially if they’re undergoing oral surgery. We have three different options that we employ, and the one we choose will be based on your weight, age, medical history, any medications you’re taking, or dental history. We also take your anxiety levels into account too, and our team will follow surgical operating room protocols, monitoring you the entire time.
Three Possible Options
Our sedation options include nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. This option is administered through a mask over your nose, so you inhale a gas that helps you enter a calm and euphoric state. You remain conscious, but have little to no memory of the procedure. The effects can be adjusted during treatment and wear off once the procedure ends, so you can return to your normal routine and drive yourself home!
For a deeper calming option, we could offer oral sedation before the procedure in pill or liquid form. You’re still conscious, but with little to no memory and the effects wear off after a bit, so you need someone to bring you home afterward. With IV sedation, the deepest option available, we administer it intravenously so you enter a deep state of calm with no memory of the treatment. With these options, you need to avoid food and drink in the hours before the procedure, and wear loose and comfortable clothing.
